Great School Resource
Some evacuees flourished in their new surroundings. Others endured a miserable time away from home. Many evacuees from inner-city areas had never seen farm animals before or eaten vegetables. In most instances a child’s upbringing in urban poverty will be misinterpreted as parental neglect.
Rationing In WW2
Children’s rations were slightly different to adults. Children would have extra food considered essential for healthy growth, such as milk and orange juice. The National Milk Scheme provided one pint of milk for every child under 5. Fruit and vegetables were not rationed but were in short supply.
Toys In WW2
Many toy factories were now making guns or plane parts or other war equipment, so there was a shortage of new toys. Children swapped old toys at ‘toy-exchanges’. Many wartime toys are made of paper or card, because rubber, plastics, wood and metal are needed for the war. Lots of toys would have a war theme.
